Tutor quality
Quality is central to RootedLearn. We work to make sure the tutors families are matched with are verified, capable in their subjects, and reliable, and we keep monitoring quality after a tutor joins. This page explains what quality means to us, how we set the bar, how we keep it high over time, and what happens when it falls short.

1. What quality means at RootedLearn
Quality tutoring on RootedLearn combines several things:
- Genuine subject expertise at the level being taught.
- Effective teaching that adapts to the learner and helps them make progress.
- Reliability — turning up on time, prepared, and following through on scheduled lessons.
- Professionalism and safety — respectful conduct and appropriate boundaries, especially with children.
- Clear communication — useful lesson reports and responsiveness to guardians and learners.
2. Application and verification bar
Before a tutor can be recommended to families, they must complete our application and review workflow. Tutors are independent contractors and must submit accurate profile details, subjects and levels, availability, and qualifications. Our review includes checking the certificates and qualifications tutors submit, a subject-based assessment that every tutor completes to verify their knowledge of each subject they claim to teach, and profile and intro-video review before admin approval. Approval can be declined, paused, or withdrawn based on the outcome.
3. Assessing subject expertise
We look at whether a tutor can genuinely teach the subjects and levels they list. This may involve reviewing their qualifications and experience, and subject assessments where used. The aim is to confirm that a tutor's stated expertise matches what they will actually be teaching, so families can trust the match.
4. Profile and intro-video review
We review tutor profiles — including the bio, teaching focus, subject coverage, availability, and any introduction or intro video — for accuracy, professionalism, and completeness. Profiles that are misleading, incomplete, or inappropriate are not approved. Tutors must keep their profiles accurate and up to date.
5. Ongoing quality monitoring
Quality does not stop at approval. We continue to monitor tutors using signals such as:
- Lesson reports and the usefulness and accuracy of what tutors submit.
- Learner and guardian feedback and reviews.
- Attendance, punctuality, and lesson completion signals.
- Support requests and dispute history involving the tutor.
- Admin oversight and periodic review.
6. Lesson delivery and professionalism
Tutors are expected to arrive prepared and on time, teach respectfully and at the right level, use the RootedLearn online classroom appropriately, protect learner information, maintain professional boundaries, keep lessons and communication on the platform, and submit accurate lesson reports where required. These expectations are set out in full in our Tutor policy and Safeguarding policy.
7. How feedback and reviews work
After lessons, guardians and learners can share feedback and reviews about their experience. This feedback helps other families choose, and it feeds into our quality monitoring. We expect reviews to be honest and fair, and tutors must not attempt to manipulate ratings or pressure families for positive reviews.
8. When quality falls short
Where a tutor's quality, reliability, or conduct falls below our standards, we respond proportionately. Depending on the issue, this may include:
- Coaching, guidance, or a request to improve specific areas.
- Restriction from being recommended for new matches while concerns are reviewed.
- Suspension or permanent removal for serious or repeated issues.
Safety concerns are handled through our Safeguarding policy and may lead to precautionary suspension while we review.
9. Flagging a quality concern
If you are not happy with a tutor's teaching, reliability, or professionalism, tell us. Contact support with the booking details and your concern, and we will review the situation and advise on the next step — which may include a rematch to a different tutor. Urgent safety concerns should go to our safeguarding route.
10. Continuous improvement
We keep refining how we verify tutors, assess expertise, and monitor quality as the platform grows. Family feedback is an important part of that, and we welcome it.
